A Day in the Life - Vol. 1: Spring 2014

I first "met" Julia when I did a guest post for her "Moms Make It Work" series and I have really enjoyed following her blog ever since.

One thing Julia (and other bloggers) write about is a fun series called "Day in the Life".  I just knew I wanted to do one!  Since my blog started primarily as a way for me to document life (so as not to forget about its happenings), this was a perfect series for me!  A few days ago, Julia posted her notification that it was time for the Q1 DITL.  I took a deep breath and accepted the challenge.

I decided to pick a weekday for my first DITL, because those tend to be the most crazy...but it was a little off because it also happened to be Eleanor's first day of Spring Break.  Also, I'm pretty sure no one cares about what I do at work...I'm not even sure the people at work care about what I do at work!  It's difficult for me too, as I usually try and keep my work out of so many of my blog posts. Maybe it's because I am the HR Director and I feel there should be that differentiation between work and play or maybe I'm just a weirdo??  Well, it was my first try!  Here it goes!

Date: Monday, April 6, 2015
Dana: 34
Andy: 37
Eleanor: 6 (Kindergarten)
Oliver: 7 mo. 12 days
Karl: 10 (~70 in human years and still full of spunk!)

3:56 am - Oliver is up for the 2nd time tonight.  It's my turn.  I go in and start changing his diaper.  He starts screaming as though I've cut off a leg.  This is typical.  Andy comes stumbling in with the bottle and starts feeding him while I finish changing him.  (YES, I KNOW I shouldn't change his diaper at night, but if we don't...then it leaks all over and he wakes up soaked AND hungry) (YES, I know I need to change this madness sooner rather than later).

4:03 am - The good news is that I'm back in bed.  It's a relatively quick process, although incredibly inconvenient.  And of course I can't fall back asleep right away because Oliver is grunting and groaning in the monitor.  Please fall back to sleep buddy!

4:09 am - Oliver stops making noises.  Yay!  He's really pretty good and putting himself back to bed, so long as he doesn't start screaming.

5:30 am - My alarm is already going off  and I'm quick to hit the snooze!

5:47 am - I'm finally up!  I stumble toward the bathroom and start the shower.  I brush my teeth as the water heats up.  After I shower, I open the door because my little bathroom is full of steam and I can't see anything!  It also means that Andy will probably have to wake up now too, because the light shines right on him.  Eh, too bad!  At least he gets to stay in the comfy bed and he can ignore me if he chooses to, but I like being able to talk to him as I get ready in the morning! (I hate that Andy's nightstand doesn't "match" our bedroom set.  I REALLY want to do something about this...but as it is, it fits really nice in a small spot - and unless you are in this spot, you can't really see it...)

I pick a pair of khaki pants and my Brewer's zippy in honor of Opening Day....I can wear Badger red tonight.  My khaki's greatly need to be ironed.  I try using wrinkle release, but they really need the big guns and I have to plug in the iron *groan*
Oliver is certainly up, but is doing a good job entertaining himself in his crib.  He has gotten pretty good at turning on his "mobile" and loves to watch the monkeys!  At some point, Andy has gotten out of bed to get Oliver.  He brings him into our room and now we all get to hang out together while I finish getting ready!

6:34 am - I'm finally done upstairs and ready to start the second half of my morning routine downstairs.

6:43 am - Eleanor makes her way downstairs.  It's not that she has been sleeping...she was upstairs cleaning her room!  I'm not really sure what time she woke up this morning, but I assure you it was too early!  It's her first day of spring break and we told her she couldn't play today until she cleaned the room (now that I think about it I didn't check on it before I left...well, at least Andy is home, he'll make sure it's actually clean!)  She seems exceptionally clingy this morning. I'm having a hard time understanding if this phase of hers is a little delayed sibling rivalry or if it's a six-year-old girl thing.  I hate to even say it, but it's kind of driving me nuts.  She's always under foot!

As I'm getting ready this morning and making my lunch, I notice some raw meat "juices" on our fridge shelf.  Dang it!  I was supposed to vacuum seal that meat last night!  My laziness got in the way and now I have salmonella all over my fridge (an exaggeration, I'm sure).  I must package this meat now...or it will drive me crazy all morning.  As a supportive husband, Andy doesn't say a word, even though he knows, in 10 minutes, I'll be complaining about how I'm running late!

7:00 am - I'm not exactly ready to leave yet and Oliver is letting us know and he is quite hungry. I've discovered some breastmilk in the freezer that I want to use; however, we are totally out of our groove now (not used to heating frozen breastmilk) and it takes us the longest time to get it to a comfortable temperature for Oliver. I'm not sure if it's the different taste or if it's not as warm as he is used to but he has no interest in it.  Andy battles him through 2 to 3 ounces and we decide to give up.
**Small side note: this morning really is the same as most mornings, as Andy usually takes Eleanor to the bus stop in the morning.  However, today, Eleanor will stay home with Andy.  SO LUCKY to have him work from home!  She's fairly independent, so he can still work.  He wouldn't be able to do the same with Oliver...**

7:14 am - We are leaving the house just a few minutes later than normal - the mornings always end up so crazy!  Meat packaging projects aside.

7:19 am - We arrive at daycare.  I try to take a picture of Oliver as I am walking in, but I don't want to show too much of the building and I don't want people looking at me like I'm crazy.  #fail  I do manage to snap a quick picture of Oliver sitting up like such a big boy in his Brewer's track suit.  Dang you look tired buddy!  YOU SHOULD SLEEP THROUGH THE NIGHT!

7:31 am -  I'm back in the car heading to work. Drop off took a little longer than I wanted because I was trying to eavesdrop on a conversation of some new parents that will be bringing their twins into Oliver's classroom. It clearly is the first time bringing their children to a center type of daycare. Their instructions and detailed account of what they expect the teachers to do was mind-numbing (not judging...I was there once too, I'm sure).  But I was running late and feeling crabby and I wanted to look at them and say "You know there will be other children in the room with him right?" In fact there are 8children in Oliver's classroom!  Now I'll have to worry about this for the rest of the day!

7:43 am - I'm at work.  Bittersweet.  I sit for the first time all morning and compose my thoughts.  I receive this message from Andy.  Awesome.

9:02 am - First meeting of the morning - Check-in with one of my recruiters.  After about 20 minutes of personal chit chat we get to it and the meeting runs late...
9:43 am - I'm ready to get back to my stuff...I wonder how things are going at home??

Somewhere between 9:43 and 10:12, my HR Generalist, "K" and I get distracted talking about Easter and I show off the kiddos.  She's a good employee and tells me how adorable my children are!  Agh!  Why can't I get focused today??  I wonder how things are going at home?  No news is good news?

10:30 am - I wonder where my boss is? We are supposed to have our weekly check-in meeting.  Well no big deal, I'm looking for a document, which I can't find and it's driving me nuts! It's just like at home: I hate losing things and it consumes me until I find them (Or spilled meat juice in the fridge).

10:56 am - I still can't find the document but at least found some parts of the information I was looking for.  Boss walks in for our weekly meeting and tell him I need to leave by 11:05 to take Eleanor to a doctor's appointment. We start with the friendly chit chat and then get into the work.  Of course things take a little bit longer and he's the one that asks when I needed to leave.  DANG IT!

11:17 am - I am finishing said meeting and just walking to my car for Eleanor's doctors appointment! I swear!  I send Andy a text message instructing him and Eleanor to start heading over to the appointment, which results in a phone conversation, which takes about the amount of time it takes me to get in my car and start leaving work, I guess I could have picked them up anyway!  I tell him to leave now and run there as fast as possible (yup, it's faster for us to walk to the Dr. then to drive sometimes!).... I wonder when he told her that she had a doctors appointment?

11:32 am - All checked into the doctor's office!  Two minutes late but I don't think anyone will notice.  I really have to go the bathroom and I haven't drank nearly enough water today (an odd mix for sure), but I know the minute I leave, they'll call us!
The day has been going well for Andy and Eleanor.  She played outside with her friend most of the morning. He did inform me that he had to run formula up to daycare because they couldn't find the stuff that I had brought this morning (See! The twins are already taking up all of their attention!)  I called to let them know that I put the formula with his diapers in the container with his name on it...oh yes, they found it the first time they changed his diaper...now they have two containers of formula.  Seems like an unfortunate series of events.  Argh.

11:47 am - Maybe they noticed that we were late because it's 11:47 and we are still waiting in the waiting room.  Specialty medicines are the worst!

Oops...there is that impatience of mine again...I spoke too soon, it's 11:49 am and were in the office. Eleanor weighs in at 44#. I have no idea what that even means for a 6 year old.  She doesn't have her annual check-up until May (although she's a December baby...yes, mom screwed this up!) and I'm so curious to chart her growth!

Eleanor may be cleared of her peanut allergy; however, she still suffers from horrible, horrible skin and we've been seeing a dermatologist for some time now.  Then I slack, fail to make an appointment, or do bad with her lotion or she breaks out in some new rash and we are back at derm.  I really hope to avoid all this with Oliver!
This is what really nervous looks like.  Pretty sure there will be shots at today's visit.
12:15 pm - We out!  Eleanor did AWESOME!  So proud of her!  And yes, there were shots.  2 of them.

Earlier this spring, we discovered that Eleanor greatly needs a new scooter! I'm pretty sure she is using the same "Dora the Explorer" scooter she used when she was 3!  Not only are the handlebars too short for her, but she it also has three wheels! She has been riding her friend's razor scooter with ease and Andy and I have been discussing buying her a new one.

This is the problem with the December 24 birthday...we certainly couldn't wait until birthday or Christmas to buy her one and it's not like we can buy her one now and then try to explain to a 7 year old that she received her present in April...We didn't tell her going into her doctor's appointment today that there was a potential razor scooter on the line, but after watching the way she behaved at the doctors appointment we decided today was as good as any to get the scooter.

12:something! - A quick stop at Target (I forgot to take pictures until the very end #newbiefail). First we went and looked at scooters and then got distracted by all the Easter clearance stuff!  We were in heaven filling our cart with 50% off spring candy and decorations!  Too bad all the candy has to go into the freezer (long story)! But I will say this: it's not like I really long for it I know how I feel now and how I feel when I am popping Reese's peanut butter eggs in my mouth and I'll take this feeling over that feeling any day!
12:45 pm - Just dropped them off at home.  Andy was going to make Eleanor some lunch and then she was going to take a nap.  Yup.  My 6 year old still naps...sometimes she asks to, sometimes we tell her she has to.  She doesn't every day, but she certainly benefits from it (we all do!)  Sometimes she naps for 30 minutes, sometimes she just rests, and sometimes she can sleep for 2 hours!  Anyways, I guess I just have to go back to work.  On my drive I see a cat climbing up a window.  Apparently, this is hilarious to me.
12:51 pm - I pull into the parking lot of work and as I get out I realize what a little sunshine can do.  I check the weather and am surprised it's only 52...it feels amazing and I really hope E plays outside this afternoon.  I wonder what happened at work while I was gone?
12:56 pm - Nothing - that's what happened while I was gone!

Around this time I also receive a text message that our friends are moving to the NB!  Yay! Happy times!  Home buying is the worst, so I totally appreciate her need for a drink. We'll have to figure out how to make that happen.  Soon.

2:57 pm - This day has flown by!  I guess I better get set up for my 3 pm training session!  "Employee Check-ins" are everyone's favorite topic!!  Oh the life of an HR Director!

3:02 pm - We are missing several participants...oh well - time to get started.  My participants seem less than interested...listen up folks!!

3:47 pm - That torture is over.  Argh - just do your employee reviews and we won't have to endure these meetings!

4:02 pm - I need some Spark - can I make it a double???  I feel like I got nothing done today!

4:57 pm - I'm calling it. Mostly because I need to get home, change, try to grab something to eat, grab Eleanor and get to my sister's so we can go to our Barre class.  And partly because some of my coworkers have completely drove me nuts by their lack of attendance and participation in our training class...Yup - I held onto the grudge for almost an hour...and really...I'm only leaving 3 minutes early!  As I walk outside I notice my sun has gone away and grey clouds take up the sky.  I'm too lazy to snap a picture.

5:05 pm -  I'm home. Gosh, I love my commute! I'm greeted with a driveway full of colorful drawings! It makes me happy!  Especially happy to know that Eleanor spent a lot of time outside this afternoon!
The house is quiet...Andy and Eleanor went to pick up Oliver (and apparently left front door open...) The house smells delicious with dinner in the oven, but my kitchen is already a disaster.  I run upstairs to get changed!

5:12 pm - This little monster runs upstairs to see me.  She makes my heart burst with happiness!  As we snap this picture, I notice she is wearing her brand new boots...OK, so I only paid like $4 for them on clearance at Kohl's...but why is she wearing them to play outside?  I "scold" her...expecting my 6 year old to know better...really, Dana??  Besides, they are really probably the only shoes that fit her!  I did just buy her a pair of tie shoes, hoping it would encourage her to practice...but clearly, that was too much to ask for.  Eleanor goes to change her shoes.
We meet up back downstairs and Andy and I try to have some conversation while he is getting dinner on the table.  I snap his picture, although I know my "need to blog this crazed moment" will most likely irritate him...so I try to be discreet about it!  Eleanor is busy snapping pictures too.  Her homework over Spring Break was to take 10 pictures and bring them in for an "Artist in Residence" program...she's a buding photographer for sure!  Can't wait to look at her 1 million pictures she has taken!  She also spends time entertaining Oliver.  That girl can make that boy laugh like none other!  He truly thinks she is the greatest.

Dinner is a delicious "Clean Eating" meatloaf recipe I found...Oliver snacks on a rice cake.  Andy will feed him after we leave.  I think we talk during dinner...but I'm not sure!

5:30 pm - I am back in the car!  All that just happened in 17 minutes!  That was monumental! I hope I don't get sick at class after eating dinner at that quickly!Traffic driving to the expressway is Ridiculous!  I'm so spoiled with my commute - I'm not used to this, nor was I expecting it!  I enjoy my time talking to Eleanor...although, 1/2 the time, I don't really know what she's talking about!  I try to follow.

5:59 pm -  We still make it on time and quite impressed with myself!  I didn't speed! In fact, Eleanor tells my sister I drove 20 miles an hour just to get here!  My sister is cooking pizza for her family...mmmm, it smells delicious!  Of course...now Eleanor decides she is hungry again.  She didn't eat a horrible dinner, but I wouldn't say it was great either.  She joins her cousins at the table with a piece of pizza....
**side note** Eleanor is going to spend some time at my sister's house during spring break.  My oldest nephew is old enough to stay home with them for one day and my sister doesn't work on Wednesdays.  This is a HUGE help to us.  Eleanor could have gone to daycare for the week, but I feel like she's getting a little old for it...and now I don't have to pay for it all week too!  Plus - Eleanor ADORES her cousins.  She went through a phase when she called them her brothers!**

6:12 pm - Back in the car!  My sister and I decide to carpool to class, which is super nice, because now we get to chat in the car on the way to class.  I love this girl!

6:26 pm - I realize I haven't been to class in almost 2 weeks and while I've been trying to get better with regular running, this class might just kick my arse tonight!
7:47 pm - We had a substitute teacher and, while she was amazing, I think she was trying to kill me!  Class started late- so it ended late.  That's nice...but I'm really ready to get home now.  I do a quick check, Oliver is sleeping.  I would have been surprised at anything different.  He goes to bed like a champ at night and usually we are forcing him to stay up until 7 pm.

7:53 pm - I just drop Melissa off.  I  feel super sad because I didn't run in to get one last hug and kiss from Eleanor, but I would have only made a situation worse and would have gotten her all wound up. Collin's bedroom light was on, so hopefully they were already upstairs reading books.  Besides, I still need to shower and change before I get to sit down to start watching the Badger game.

8:15 pm -  Home.  Andy's trying to talk to me, but I rush past him and tell him I just want to get the shower over with and in my pajamas so we can finally relax!

8:32 pm - I'm a super fast shower taker when I need to be.  Besides, I'll shower again in the morning, so I didn't need to wash my hair.  I get downstairs, pour a glass of water and go to grab some ice.  The baby food I made on Sunday is still sitting on cookie sheets in the freezer.  Argh, this is going to annoy me if I ignore it, so I quick grab some plastic bags and pack up the pureed pears.  Again, I'm too lazy to snap a picture of the beautiful mounds of homemade pears.  I. just. want. to. sit.  But alas, I'm also hungry, so I make a quick snack.

I don't know what time it is, but I'm finally sitting.  Ahhhhhh!  The Badger game is on and I'm on the computer finishing my Snapfish photo book of our recent vacation and trying to find things to buy on Amazon so I can use my new "Prime" membership.  I start researching car seats, as my little chunk is getting a little big for his infant carrier.  Plus, he can sit up now, so he'll quickly learn to prefer high chairs and carts over laying, staring at the ceiling.

My sister and I exchange a few text messages during this time too:
9:37 pm - Holy crap. I think the Badger's really have a chance at winning this!  My allegiance stays with Marquette, but ultimately, I'm from Wisconsin, so I'm pretty excited for them!  However, I really am forcing myself to stay up for this game.  I'll want to say I saw it ....but dang am I tired!  I miss having a TV in our bedroom. I never thought I'd say that!  And ever since we moved, we haven't had one in the bedroom.  I liked when Andy would be able to watch TV in bed and I could fall asleep comfortably.  I'm running out of things to do, so I decide I should probably work on updating Oliver's calendar.  I'm kind of far behind!

9:56 pm - They've got this.  I'm going to start getting ready for bed, slowly, still forcing myself to stay awake.  At least I got my Snapfish photo album ordered.  I'm excited to have it in time to show my sister-in-law the next time I see her!

10:27 pm - OMG!  What just happened?? I stayed up for that :-(. In the words of my husband, "That was intensly disappointing."  I feel so bad for them! I tell Andy I feel like I'm going to cry, he laughs and tells me, "You are such a girl".  And now we get to go to bed!  Andy gets the two bottles and formula and I fill the thermos with hot water. It saves us a trip downstairs in the middle of the middle of the night when O wakes up.  Now...come one Oliver....please sleep for us!  We don't usually stay up this late!

I'm not sure what time it is, but it's before midnight and probably around 11.  Oliver is crying - so much for sleeping through the night!  I hear Andy get out of bed and I mumble to him, asking him if he needs help.  At least I think this comes out of my mouth...I'm never really sure.  If my math is correct, Oliver will most likely be waking me up for my feeding in 4 hours.  Tomorrow I'm going to research sleep training...but for now...I'm going to sleep!

Oh my gosh!  I did it!  My first Day In The Life post!  I had SO much fun and I KNOW some day I'm going to look back on this series and be SO SO happy I did it!  Yay!!  This is life.  Life in April of 2015!  (Next qtr I need to take even MORE pictures...and preferably of people!  And poor Karl missed out on any of the action!)

  1. Haha - love that you stopped to take a picture of the cat climbing up the window. Also LOVE Amazon prime (not only for free shipping, but for all the movies and TV shows you can watch), except for the fact that almost everyday there is a box on our front step because the husband can't stop buying things.

Glad you tackled your first day in the life post. They are a lot of work, but they are fun to look back on.

  2. Congrats on your first DITL!

Also, I am so jealous of your short commute, and that things like the doctor's office are quicker to walk to than drive. That's what I get for living out in the suburbs. ;)

And oh the multiple wake-ups at night. My son is only 4.5 months but going through a huge sleep regression that I fear is going to become our new normal. Hope you found some helpful info in your sleep research!
