Quick Oliver update

So this is one of those blog posts that I'm really just writing for myself, so that in days and years from now, I can look back on this all and remember it.

Today, we received another call from daycare.  Today's call said Oliver's rash was now being classified as an "unidentifiable rash" that needed doctor's clearance for him to return to day care.

Rash -- what?  Let me fill you in...

A little over a week ago, I noticed that Oliver had a pretty bad "rash" on his chin and right below his chin on his little stumpy neck.  We assumed that it was because Oliver is just a really drooly kid.  I mean, crazy amounts of drool come out of this kid (I don't remember this with Eleanor...but that's probably because I don't have a great blog post like this to go back to!)  Between the cold and the drool, we figured his skin was chapped and chaffed.

We started putting lots of Vaseline and Aquaphor on him.  We started to make sure we were changing his clothes frequently to ensure he wasn't in wet clothes.  We made sure he was wearing bibs - dry bibs.  I even invested in more adorable bibs by Ollie and Olina (my friend Erika).  But nothing seemed to be working.  In fact, his rash was getting worse.

We really hadn't introduced any new food.  He had avocado on Thursday, but nothing new since. We switched his formula from Similac to Up and Up...but seriously, if it was an allergic reaction, it would be all over his body...this was JUST on his neck and face.

Yesterday, daycare told us that his rash was getting worse and I had noticed that he had scratch marks on his head.  It's like he's clawing at his head at night. My poor, poor baby!  I decided it was time to get a little more serious with our lotion.  I knew what to do - I had been through all of this with Eleanor.  Eleanor had horrible eczema.  Horrible, horrible skin.  So, to Target we went and $40 in creams and ointments later, we were home.  Oliver is so congested too and just couldn't breath or get comfortable - so it was a rough start to the night.

Today, I was in a 5.5 hour meeting and received a phone call from an unrecognizable number...which of course I ignore.  I finally check it at 2:30 to learn that daycare had called about Oliver's rash.  I called and was amazed I could get in at 4:30.

When I first saw Dr. D...I asked for my frequent buyer card.  I feel like we have been there SO much.  He assured me other families were there more than us and that Oliver was just born at a really rough time because he's only known fall and winter.

Dr. D also officially diagnosed Oliver with atopic dermatitis...otherwise known as...Eczema (I totally could have my M.D.  I called it!)  I got the same speech I got with Eleanor, what to avoid, what could be Oliver's triggers, etc, etc.

Dr. D also said that Oliver is still having a lot of trouble with his breathing and he hears a lot of wheezing.  He said the same gene that causes the eczema also causes the asthma, so it makes sense that these are going hand in hand...

...he also cautioned that the gene that causes asthma and eczema, also cause allergies.
Yippie.
I asked if he was telling me that Oliver was going to have food allergies.  Of course, he can't predict that, but he did say that when the time comes, we are going to have to be extra careful with introducing the typical allergens - nuts, eggs, dairy...
OMG - all this time, I secretly blamed Nic on Eleanor's food allergy.  Nic had horrible eczema as a child and my skin was always sensitive, so it was hard to say where her allergy came from...But since we can't blame Nic on Oliver's skin...there is only ONE common denominator.

So, that's that.  We have yet another inhaler to see if we can't clear up this wheezing once and for all.  We have a list of lotions to use and a prescription for a steroid cream for Oliver.  Andy went to pick up the cream after our appointment and it's the SAME cream we had for Eleanor.

In the meantime, I am going to cross every finger and toe on my body that we do not have to experience life with another child with another food allergy!

And as I was leaving the doctor's office, I said, "See you next Thursday..."  I really am spending too much time there.  Is it spring yet?  Summer?
